From Joy to Woe: Viewers Brace for Impact of Controversial Christmas Movie

Apparently you’ll want to avoid this one if you ‘wish to be happy at Christmas’

After a morning spent opening presents, a lunch time absolutely scranning as many pigs in blankets as possible and maybe a ‘big walk’ comes the time of slumping in front of the telly

Christmas Day just doesn’t quite feel the same without everyone gathering around the TV and some years it’s often tricky to settle on something to watch.

Perhaps you can’t think of anything other than the Gavin and Stacey finale or the special Outnumbered episode. Or maybe you like to pop on a festive film to end up falling asleep in front of. But there’s one movie that viewers warn against putting on as it could ‘ruin’ Christmas day.

Released back in 2021, Silent Night is available to rent on the likes of Apple TV+ and Prime Video for people looking for something a little darker at this time of year.

Starring Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Lily-Rose Depp, Lucy Punch and Sope Dirisu, it’s directed by Camille Griffin.

The synopsis reads: “Nell, Simon, and their boy Art are ready to welcome friends and family for what promises to be a perfect Christmas gathering.

“Perfect except for one thing: everyone is going to die.”

Yeah, like I said, it’s dark alright.

So basically, it becomes clear during their lovely little Christmassy night that it’s going to be their last.

Britain is set to be engulfed in a poisonous green mist after much of the world has already been wiped out.

And the government has came up with a way to help – by providing an exit pill. So, they all prepare to take it at midnight, after one last Christmas night.

Twitter users quickly made the realisation it wasn’t a particularly light film as they wrote: “WHY AM I WATCHING THIS I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE A FUN MURDER MYSTERY OH GOD IT’S NOT.”

Another echoed: “Put Silent Night (2021) on thinking this will be a nice Christmas film for tonight. That’ll teach me to read the synopsis.”

It's not exactly merry. (Altitude Film Distribution)

And this led to the warning: “Don’t watch on Christmas day as it may upset you.”

Some say they were a ‘wreck after watching’ as another urged: “If you wish to be happy this Christmas DON’T WATCH SILENT NIGHT.”

However, there are viewers who call it a a ‘pleasant yet bleak surprise’ and wrote: “It’s not your typical Christmas flick but rather a very, very dark comedy with many truly dramatic aspects.”

One joked it’s ‘Love and Death Actually’ while another who ‘hates’ Christmas films said ‘this one is a doozie’.Featured Image Credit: Altitude Film Distribution

Terrifying Christmas series hailed ‘one of the best horrors ever’ now free to stream

The show originally landed five years ago and is now streaming for Christmas

Most of the Christmas stuff doing the rounds on streaming and good old telly tends to be pretty jolly.

Even with the burglary and villains of Home Alone, it’s still a fun film. And there’s no denying the likes of Elf, the Gavin and Stacey specials and Love Actually will put a smile on your face.

But sometimes, people just want something a little, well, darker.

And a terrifying Christmas (ish) series hailed ‘one of the best horrors ever’ is now free to stream in the UK.

It’s probably just not quite something to whack on for the family on the big joyous day.

Pronounced Nosferatu, NOS4A2 was originally released back in 2019 with a second season the following year.

It’s based on the best-selling novel by Joe Hill and tells a ‘different kind of vampire story’.

Sitting with an average audience rating of 82 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, it follows Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings) who is a gifted young woman who discovers she has a ‘supernatural ability to find lost things’.

But this ends up putting her onto a ‘collision course’ with the particularly evil and immortal villain, Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto).

Supposedly, it's Christmassy (AMC)

Supposedly, it’s Christmassy (AMC)

And here’s the particularly dark yet somehow festive part, he feeds off the souls of children and then deposits what’s left of them into Christmasland.

This bizarre place is ‘a twisted place of Manx’s imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law’.

Luckily for UK fans of the show and for those hoping for something more haunting at this time of year, NOS4A2 was added to ITVX earlier this week.

And X users are buzzing as they wrote: “NOS4A2 is now available on ITVX. Such a great series!”

Others call it ‘one of the best horror series’ while one even declared it as a ‘golden series of the century’.

On Rotten Tomatoes, some viewers say they were ‘captivated the whole time’ as it had their ‘heart pounding’.

Others say they were ‘shattered’ when the show ended, calling it ‘far better than Stranger Things’.

Another added: “This is SUCH a good show! I love the originality of the take on a sort of vampire villain, as well as the story line. Joe Hill’s book was so captivating, and they did a great job making it into a series!”

Although some do slate it as ‘pretty boring’ and ‘too creepy’, with one viewer saying it began to feel like ‘an obligation rather than a pastime’.

Xmas is not only the most wonderful time of the year, but also the most hectic.

Shopping with a budget, last minute gifts and arguing over whose house to do it at are just some of the reasons why the lead-up is just a nightmare.

So you’d think that on Christmas Day, now all of the hard work is done, you’d take a little time out for yourselves.

But apparently not.

At least eight million British adults have never done the hanky-panky on Christmas Day, a Festive Sex Census has revealed.

According to Kiiroo’s Festive Sex Census, in collaboration with One Poll, just 62 percent of UK adults surveyed admitted to having had sex on Christmas Day.

On the flip side, this means that at least eight million adults in the UK have quite possibly never had sex on Christmas Day.

Surprisingly, the so-called older generation (45-54 and 65+) are the most likely to get it on at Xmas.

And 82 percent of single parents said they’d found time for Christmas Day sex.

So why are so many of us seemingly against doing the dirty on Santa’s big day?

We asked the LADbible audience why this is the case and here are some of their best replies.

So you'd think that on Christmas Day, now all of the hard work is done, you'd take a little time out for yourselves. But apparently not.

“Isn’t it an unwritten rule that the only fella who’s allowed to empty his sack in your house on Crimbo day is Santa?” one person joked.

“If not, my Mrs has had me right off for the last 19 years.”

“That’s cos most men are buzzing of Lynx Africa on Christmas day,” a second said.

While a third added: “Have they had too much stuffing on their plates.”

“A good drink, an absolute dream of a dinner, some quality chocolate and a chill-out with the open fire burning,” another quipped.

“That’ll do me, I’ll smash the missus on Boxing Day.”

“The kids are off school so no bloody chance unless you have a separate bedroom wing just for yourselves,” someone else commented.

82 percent of single parents said they’d found time for Christmas Day sex.

Well, according Kiiroo’s intimacy expert Natasha Ivanovic, it’s quite simple.

She said: “Christmas is a time where couples can often find themselves apart, and intimacy is hard to come by.

“A combination of factors including too much wine, over-indulgence on Christmas Turkey, spending the day with your in-laws and grandparents, children getting up early or being in a long distance relationship can disrupt festive sex.

“Younger adults can find this puts a strain on their relationship when they want to be closest to their partner.”

Graphic horror film that caused viewers to faint is available to stream for free in the UK

Graphic horror film that caused viewers to faint is available to stream for free in the UK

The gory horror film is available to stream now.

A graphic horror movie that caused viewers to walk out of the cinema is now available to stream for free in the UK.

Another day, another excellent horror recommendation!

The Julia Ducournau led film follows the bizarre story of Alexia (Agathe Rousselle) a woman with a titanium plate fitted in her head, after being injured in a car crash as a child.

It's not for everyone.

NEON/Diaphana Distribution

With murderous thoughts on her mind, she embarks on an eerie journey of identity and love when she’s forced to go on the run.

When Alexia gets out of the hospital she completely ignores her parents and embraces their car – very passionately.

As an adult with a large scar on her head, she takes up a job as a showgirl at a motor show.

Clearly attracted to metal, in one scene Alexia enters a vehicle naked, has sex with the car, and becomes pregnant.

‘How does one know when a car has got them pregnant?’ I hear you ask. Well, they start secreting motor oil from their vagina, and eventually, they give birth to a titanium baby.

Take a look at the trailer for Titane – which is French for ‘titanium’ – below:

By the way, it’s also worth mentioning that Alexia has a nasty murderous streak, meaning as well as the crossover between motoring and eroticism, there’s lot of grisly deaths to contend with.

The violence isn’t limited to others either, with Alexia breaking her own nose by continually bashing it on a sink in one memorably grim scene.

Anyway, Rousselle has defended the film, arguing the shock it’s caused is a reflection of societal sexism.

Speaking to The Times, she said: “First of all, it’s a female character and a female director. Like, end of story. That’s just it.

“If it had been a male director – Tarantino, Cronenberg, anyone – it would’ve been less surprising. And we’re so used to men being violent and making violent movies. It’s kind of time for men to know that women can be violent as well.”

Rousselle doesn't think there'd be so much fuss if the film was made by men.

NEON/Diaphana Distribution

Upon hearing that people had walked out after the nose-breaking scene, the 33-year-old said: “That’s a shame. Because that’s the last thing that’s super-hard to watch, and the next hour is pretty OK.”

And, while the movie may be painful to watch, Rousselle revealed that it was even more painful to make, as she dislocated a shoulder, injured her hips and actually broke her nose during shooting.

She said: “I basically had a chiropractor on set all the time.”

If you’ve not been put off, Titane is available to watch on Channel 4 catch-up now.

The film is in French with English subtitles.
