Amazon Prime Gets Mixed Reviews as Boxing Day Premier League Matches Spark Complaints

Everyone has had the same complaint

Amid the Boxing Day fixtures showing on Amazon Prime today, millions will be tuning in to watch the Premier League.

The tradition of Boxing Day fixtures runs back over 100 years, with football games previously being played on Christmas and Boxing Day in the Victorian era.

This was due to the bank holiday, which allowed more fans to attend and would lead to fixture congestion that nowadays would have Jurgen Klopp raging, as in 1913, Liverpool played on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and the 27th, winning 4-2, losing 1-0, then drawing 3-3, according to the BBC.

Fast-forward to today and, while Christmas Day is no longer on the cards for football, Boxing Day simply doesn’t feel the same without the Premier League.

The matches start from 12:30pm to 8pm, with Liverpool and Leicester concluding the fixtures for today, before Brighton and Brentford kick off at 7:30pm tomorrow (27 December), as per The Independent.

This year, however, everyone has had the same complaint about the Boxing Day fixtures on Amazon Prime.

It appears that up and down the country, the match is being played entirely without the sound.

One wrote on Twitter: “Imagine having the Boxing Day coverage with Jeff Stelling and f*cking up with no sound, well done Prime,” while another said: “Anyone elses all day coverage on @primevideosport got no sound?”

For anyone who remembers the eerie days of Covid-19 football, watching the football without any crowd noise feels beyond wrong.

Add to that the lack of commentators who’d assumedly spent a pretty penny on their Amazon, and it is less than ideal.

It has had viewers watching the Boxing Day fixtures furious, with one fan tweeting: “Just switched Jeff on and there’s no sound! @primevideosport boxing day ruined!”

Another said: “Unbelievable Jeff! Anyone else lost all sound on @primevideosport? Can’t watch the football in silence…”

A third angry fan said: “Unless my telly has gone on the blink I’m not getting any sound on Prime’s All Day match coverage…are you @primevideosport”.

One Newcastle fan concurred, saying they also had no sound.

While others have even suggested there are other issues going on with the Prime Video coverage of the Premier League, with some hearing a ‘rhythmic humming’ sound during the Newcastle matches broadcast.

One fan tweeted: “Anyone hearing a rhythmic humming on the audio @primevideosport Newcastle match?”

While Amazon have had issues in today’s fixtures, the streaming service is slowly becoming part of the furniture when it comes to screening the Premier League.

They have progressively shown more games, showing 20 games a season this current ‘cycle’, running from 2022/23 through to 2024/25.

Premier League fans given £1,000 fine warning for watching Boxing Day fixtures

Updated 12:42 23 Dec 2024 GMTPublished 12:35 23 Dec 2024 GMT

Premier League fans given £1,000 fine warning for watching Boxing Day fixtures

It’s the most wonderful time of year to make sure you’re following the rules

Tom Earnshaw

Tom Earnshaw

Millions of football fans looking to watch the Premier League fixtures this Boxing Day have been given a warning so as to make sure they don’t land themselves with a whopping £1,000 fine.

Like many sporting competitions, the Premier League takes no time off when it comes to the festive period, with all 20 clubs back in action across 26 and 27 December.

And with Boxing Day’s fixtures spaced out right across the day – from a 12.30pm early kick off between Manchester City, Everton 3pm’s Newcastle United vs Aston Villa, a 5.30pm start for Wolves vs Manchester United, and finally an 8pm match for Liverpool and Leicester City – those wanting to sit down and do nothing after a Christmas Day blow out will be given the chance to.

Friday, 27 December will then see Brighton and Brentford kick off at 7.30pm while Arsenal are at home to Ipswich Town at 8.15pm, before clubs get back into it 29 and 30 December for even more festive football in a rather gruelling fixture pile up.

How to watch Boxing Day Premier League fixtures

The Premier League fixtures on 26 and 27 December are being broadcast exclusively in the United Kingdom on Amazon Prime Video, which did the same for games earlier in December.

Those with a full Amazon Prime subscription or just a Prime Video subscription can watch as part of their monthly fees; just like you could for the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson boxing match if you had a Netflix subscription.

With services such as these, the live events they offer are part of the overall price you pay, which is a nice Brucie Bonus for subscribing Brits everywhere.

TV Licence and Amazon Prime Video

Like with Netflix, and the BBC iPlayer, you need a TV Licence to watch any of its live events despite it not being a more traditional TV service.

That’s according to TV Licensing; the body which we pay our TV Licences to in the UK, funding the BBC and its services.

Issuing a statement to LADbible earlier in 2024, the BBC said: “A TV Licence is needed to watch live content on streaming services, watch or record a TV programme on any channel and when using BBC iPlayer.

“Further information is available on the TV Licensing website or via the customer services team, who can help with any queries.”

Live events on YouTube also require a TV Licence under the regulations set out by TV Licensing.

£1,000 warning explained

A TV Licence is currently £169.50 for a full year, although you can pay for this in quarterly instalments via direct debt.

For those caught watching live television or broadcasts in the UK without a TV Licence, there is a maximum of a £1,000 fine and a day in court for not abiding by the rules.

The TV Licensing website explains: “You could be prosecuted if we find that you have been watching, recording or downloading programmes illegally. The maximum penalty is a £1,000 fine plus any legal costs and/or compensation you may be ordered to pay.”

As for the future of being prosecuted for not having a TV Licence, Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary, and Shabana Mahmood, the justice secretary, are said to be agreement when it comes to decriminalising non-payment of the licence fee.

“The administrative burden of policing non-payment of the licence fee should not be falling on the taxpayer. It should be carved out. It’s not worth the hassle it creates,” a senior government source told The Times earlier this year. Every boxing fan has tuned in tonight (8 March) to watch the long-awaited fight between Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou, but it looks like they have been left frustrated on social media.

The event is taking place in Kingdom Arena in Saudi Arabia tonight, and has consisted of several undercard bouts before the main event.

But it looks like the number of fights going the distance coupled with the waiting time between fights is getting to fans and running their patience thin.

Fans took to X to share their thoughts with one fan saying: “Just get the fight on already”

Another said: “The #JoshuaNgannou fight started 7 hours ago and the co-main event is yet to begin”

A third posted: “Are they fighting tonight at all or?”

Another echoed these thoughts, saying: “7 hours in and we’re not at the main event yet…”

The ring-walks for the main event were meant to commence at 10:50 pm GMT but at the time of writing, Zhang and Parker are still going head-to-head.

Fans have taken to social media to voice their frustrations.

Yesterday, Joshua weighed in at 252.4 lbs (114 kg) against his heavier Cameroonian counterpart, who came in at 272.6 lbs (124 kg) at their Friday weigh-in.

It means that the 34-year-old Joshua is over half a kilogram heavier than he was in his previous bout against Otto Wallin in December 2023.

During their Wednesday pre-fight press conference, there was a war of words between the two, with the winner of the bout expected to face either Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk.

The winner will face Fury or Usyk.

Amazon Prime Day warning as criminals get ready to pounce

Amazon Prime Day warning as criminals get ready to pounce

The two day sale event will be targeted in very particular ways by criminals – here’s what you need to look out for

Amazon Prime Day is right around the corner with a tonne of bargains available for millions of customers to take advantage of.

But tech experts are issuing a stern warning to those who are looking ready to snap up a good deal or even just casually browse what is available. And it concerns your privacy as criminals look to steal from you in a very specific way.

Prime Day 2024 will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday (16 and 17 July), where Prime members are given two days of some of the best deals you’ll find in the entire calendar year.

Early deals are already available a week ahead of the big sale, with a two for one deal on Ring cameras among those you can pick up already.

Expect deals across a whole range of other tech products as well as clothing and shoes, TVs, beauty products, and vouchers.

But with the sale event a week away, folk in the tech industry are warning people about a growth in cybercriminal activity that will be shining the microscope on trying to get your financial details.

What are criminals trying to do?

Research from the team at Check Point found that more than 1,230 new domains associated with Amazon have been registered in just June alone, with 85 percent flagged as malicious or suspicious. And one out of every 80 new Amazon-related domains flagged as malicious or suspicious contains the phrase ‘Amazon Prime’, showing a clear motive to target the big two day event.

Last year, Prime members bought more than 375 million items worldwide and saved more than $2.5 billion on millions of deals, making it the biggest Prime Day event ever.

It’s a pattern that means we’re likely to be more vulnerable than ever for 2024 due to the historical record demand.

“However, amidst the excitement, there is an underlying risk that cannot be ignored,” Check Point says.

“Cyber criminals leverage this occasion to carry out phishing attacks, preying on unsuspecting shoppers. These attackers employ deceptive tactics, such as sending fake emails or creating fraudulent websites, aiming to steal personal information or financial credentials.

“While Prime Day offers incredible savings, it is crucial for shoppers to remain vigilant, exercise caution while clicking on links or providing sensitive information, and ensure they are navigating legitimate platforms.”

URLs to be wary of

With any of the below URLs, do not click on them or interact with them in any way. If you can report the source to law enforcement, please do.

The bogus websites carry out a variety of methods to try and get your information, such as by designing a replica of the real thing.

Others go after you by asking to put in your log in details, which are then lost to the cybercriminals as soon as you type them out.

It is also worth keeping an eye out for bogus emails coming your way in the build up to the Prime Day event, with some criminals targeting customers by saying their account has been frozen. They claim you must log in to get your account back – do not do this.

Expert opinion

Calum Baird is a British detective in specialist technical law enforcement, who recently spent three years investigating complex cybercrime for Police Scotland, including IPTV thefts at the distribution level.

Writing on LinkedIn, he said: “Threat actors will be making the most of Amazon Prime Day deals to trick customers into visiting malicious websites. These websites are designed to appear genuine and facilitate cybercrime which could include credential theft, fraud, and the deployment of malware/ransomware.

“Make sure that you and your colleagues are aware of this tactic used by threat actors and how to avoid becoming a victim.”Featured Image Credit: Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images/Jakub Porzycki/NurPhoto via Getty Images

Boxing fans are all sharing the same complaint ahead of Fury vs Usyk

There’s one thing on everyone’s mind as they all wait for the long-anticipated heavyweight bout

Joshua Nair

There seems to be one thing on everyone’s mind in the build up to the main card of the Ring of Fire event tonight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are set to face-off at the Kingdom Arena tonight in their long-awaited undisputed heavyweight title face-off, as the main card of the boxing event.

However, there is one thing that fans have been complaining about, and that’s the waiting time for the main card, taking to X, formerly Twitter.

One posted: “When is this starting?”

Another said: “This undercard is long af omg”

A third put: “We’re not ‘moments away’ from from anything Michael Buffer, we’re about 15 or 20 minutes away at least.”

The undercard did take its time, and when most thought that the fight was starting and that we would see the Ukrainian and Brit make their way to the ring, American hip-hop artist J.I.D did a short show for an already frustrated crowd.

It is arguably one of the biggest heavyweight face-offs in the 21st century, with the winner set to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in 25 years.

Tyson Fury’s fighting record

One the biggest names in heavyweight boxing, The Gypsy King has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best in the division. Fury is undefeated in 35 career fights with the only mar on his otherwise immaculate fighting record being a draw with Deontay Wilder, where he got up from two knock-downs and even knocked Wilder down three times.

Nationality: British

Date of birth: August 12, 1988

Height: 6′ 9″

Reach: 85″

Total fights: 35

Record: 34-0-1 (24 KOs)

Oleksandr Usyk’s fighting record

Usyk holds multiple world championship titles in two different weight classes: heavyweight and cruiserweight. Usyk has secured career defining wins – including over the likes of Anthony Joshua and has never lost a fight.

Nationality: Ukrainian

Date of birth: January 17, 1897

Height: 6’ 3”

Reach: 78”

Total fights: 21

Record: 21-0 (14 KOs)

Who will the winner of Fury Vs Usyk fight next?

There’s been a lot of speculation that if Fury wins this much-anticipated fight he’ll face off against Anthony Joshua, who is in the crowd tonight. Whoever wins this fight will be the first undisputed champion in 25 years, since Lennox Lewis beat Evander Holyfield in 1999.

Fury vs Usyk Ring of Fire results:
