If you’re looking for a film that will leave your head spinning, Shutter Island is a good place to start.
The epic plot twist in the 2010 psychological thriller left us all reeling the first time we watched it – so much so, that a lot of viewers went back for seconds, and thirds.
Which is how this movie buff managed to spot a series of ‘major clues’ which were slipped into the opening scenes that went over most peoples’ heads. Check out the trailer here:

Film fanatic Alex, better known as StarkVerse online, shared a TikTok video breaking down all the subtle hints in Shutter Island which signalled that not everything was as it seemed.
Leonardo DiCaprio starred as US Marshal Edward ‘Teddy’ Daniels, who heads out to a hospital which houses the criminally insane in search of a patient who has vanished.
He is accompanied by his so-called partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) and ends up having quite the terrifying experience as he investigates the disappearance.
However, viewers were left open mouthed when the truth emerged at the end of the film.
It turned out that DiCaprio’s character was actually on a wild goose chase, as he was in fact a patient at the creepy hospital himself.
DiCaprio’s ‘seasickness’ in the opening scene was down to something else, according to Alex (Paramount Pictures)
The ‘investigation’ was a farce – which everyone on the island was in on – that was arranged by Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) as a sort of role-play therapy to help him confront his past.
It’s safe to say a few of us dropped our popcorn when we realised DiCaprio wasn’t the hero after all – but it turns out there were a ton of tip-offs littered in the opening scenes.
According to Alex, it ‘took him 14 years’ to cotton onto all of this clever foreshadowing, so don’t get disheartened if you never managed to pick up on them yourself.
In the video, the social media star explained: “It’s a movie that definitely rewards multiple viewings.
“It’s an entirely different experience watching this movie when you know all the twists at the end, because there are so many big clues very early in the film that are mind-blowing.
“Like in the beginning of the movie, we can see Teddy taking a ferry to Shutter Island and we can see him not feeling well. And he thinks this is because he is seasick – but actually, the ocean water reminds his brain of what his wife did to his kids.”
There’s the first bombshell for you…but Alex reckons the boat journey to Shutter Island is brimming with even more nods to the plot twist, too.
Clues hinting at the epic plot twist are littered in Shutter Island (Paramount Pictures)
He continued: “Then he goes up on the deck and he meets Chuck, and Teddy doesn’t think it is weird that he meets the only other US Marshal on the boat – when in reality, they would have gotten on the boat together.
“It’s so easy to accept this just as ‘normal’ for the audience, but then when they arrive on the island, if you pay attention to the guards, all of them tense up almost as if they would be afraid of Teddy.”
Alex concluded by discussing the ‘most obvious’ clue which was inserted into the beginning of Shutter Island, which occurs when Teddy and Chuck arrive at the hospital.
He went on: “When they are entering and they’re asked to take off their firearms, we can see Chuck is struggling to take his off, which should have told us right away that something is wrong here.”
As we later discover, Chuck is a psychiatrist rather than a detective, so he’s not experienced with handling guns and can’t coolly remove it from his holster. Incredible, right?
Social media users seemed to think so, as they flooded the comment sections with their thoughts on Alex’s observations.
One said: “I have always said, Shutter Island is two movies. On the second viewing, the story is completely different.”
Another wrote: “I am 100% sure that Shutter Island is an aftermovie of Inception.”
While a third added: “I finally watched this movie. When the plot twist came – until this day, there’s no plot twist that got me like this. Best plot twist ever. Makes you jump out your seat type energy.”

Matthew McConaughey missed out on iconic Titanic role that could have changed entire movie
The actor nearly changed the entire course of the James Cameron film as we know it
We all know and love Titanic, but what would it have been like had the casting director gone for Matthew McConaughey in one of the key characters?
We all know how that movie went, and it was absolutely tragic.
I’ll run through it again to bring up your past trauma surrounding Jack Dawson and that piece of floating door.
Basically, James Cameron’s 1997 flick Titanic starred Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as they told the tale of a fictional couple onboard the real-life wreckage of the British RMS Titanic in 1912.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were the best duo (Paramount Pictures)
DiCaprio played Jack Dawson in the romance movie while Winslet portrayed his love interest, Rose DeWitt Bukater.
The pair fall in love, despite the fact that Rose is engaged to a right n*b head, and they go on to have some fantastic and iconic scenes together.
We’re thinking about the hand print in the car, aren’t we?
Anyway, it all goes to sh*t in the end when the ship starts to sink after hitting an iceberg and Rose and Jack end up in the icy waters.
By the way, that was actually filmed in a pool.
Then, there came a floating door, which clearly could have fit two people on it, but Cameron decided to hurt everyone for the next few decades when he had Jack freeze to death in the ocean.
Right, now that I’ve got that out of the way, here’s how it could have gone had they chosen someone else to play Jack.
McConaughey admitted that he was reportedly handpicked picked by Paramount Studios to play Jack, but ended up missing out on the role.
The actor spoke about it on Rob Lowe’s podcast Literally! with Rob Lowe in 2021 and shared how it all went down.
Matthew McConaughey could have been Jack (Paramount Pictures)
He recalled: “So I went and read with Kate Winslet and it was not one of the auditions – they filmed it so it was like into screen test time.
“After we left, you know, it was one of those ones where they, like, followed me and when we got outside they were like, ‘That went great.’ I mean, kind of, like, hugs.
“I really thought it was going to happen. It did not.”
Had he been casted it may have changed the course of the film.
Obviously, we all know of Leo and Kate, but what about Matthew and Kate?
It just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
If he’d of been Jack in 1997, that means we wouldn’t have gotten the masterpiece that was Contact which saw him star alongside Jodie Foster in the alien sci-fi flick.
Compared to Titanic, his portfolio was right up there for thriller and suspense films.
So, maybe it was a good job he never got it.Featured Image Credit: Rick Kern/Getty Images/Paramount Pictures

Fans blown away after learning how to figure out the true ending in Inception
All these years later and someone’s figured Inception out… or have they?
There is something so enticing about famous films that leave ‘unsolved’ questions.
What was in the Pulp Fiction briefcase? Where did the Joker get his scars? And above all, the most famous unanswered question – is the ending to Inception real or not?
For years many of us probably just batted away our annoying friend who won’t stop going on about it by saying something to the effects of ‘don’t worry about it, it’s supposed to be left up to the viewer’s interpretation!’
It ended with Cobb’s totem still spinning. (Warner Bros. Pictures)
I’m happy to report then, that for those annoyed by that answer – fans have figured out a way to know whether Cobb is dreaming at the end of Inception.
In Inception, there are many signs about whether someone is dreaming or not.
Hallway rotating 360 degrees – and you’re probably in a dream. In the case of Cobb, if his spinning top doesn’t spin endlessly, he’s not.
Alas at the end of Inception the film cuts before you can see whether the top stops spinning, leaving him to run off and returning home to his kids.
Well, fans on the subreddit r/MovieDetails have noticed one particular detail from the films.
(Warner Brothers)
Due to his wife having passed away, Cobb no longer wears his wedding ring in the real world.
In his dreams, however, his wife is still alive and kicking, meaning he still wears his wedding ring.
In the final scene, however, he is not wearing it – so it finally confirms what we probably all expected, and Nolan’s film ends with a happy ending.
This led some fans in the comments to state that, in actual fact, the ring was his totem (his way of figuring out whether he’s in the real world or not), rather than the spinning top.
Check out if you can spot it in this scene:

U/WillowNiffler commented: “Dom’s wedding ring is his real totem, whether he knew it or not. When Arthur doesn’t let Ariadne hold his die, he makes it very clear that a totem has to be an item that is unique to you.
“The spinning top was Mal’s totem. Dom only wore his wedding ring in his dreams because that was the only place he could still be with Mal.”
Another account commented: “That’s what I overlooked the first couple times watching this. Cobb said earlier in the film that everyone has a unique totem to keep them anchored in reality.
“The spinning top was a misdirect. It was never his totem because that one belonged to his wife. The ring was his totem all along.”
Some fans however, are so far down the rabbit hole they can’t come back. One commented: “Yeah but what if THAT is another layer of the dream. That’s what we can’t be sure of and is the biggest dilemma of the movie.”
Listen, they may be right, but if I go that far into it I’ll lose it so for now – the debate is over.Featured Image Credit: Warner Bros.

Rotten Tomatoes has urged fans to watch another film if you like the plot twist in Shutter Island
If you want to be thrilled, be prepared for Emily Blunt to blow you away
If you’re a film buff, then finding the best suspense movie is probably something you’re keen to explore.
With so many rehashed storylines out there, it’s refreshing to come across something that both shocks and thrills you throughout.
Now, there aren’t many of these films, but Leonardo DiCaprio’s Shutter Island is a top contender.
Circling the twisted world of insane asylums, it shows Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule, who are two top US marshals, that are sent to an asylum on a remote island in order to investigate the disappearance of a patient.
Paramount Pictures
This patient is said to be a man who murdered his wife and kids and is extremely dangerous.
However, nothing is as it seems and this is where Teddy uncovers a shocking truth about the place and himself.
For anyone who has watched the movie, it sticks with you for a long time afterwards and there’s plenty mixed emotions to go with it.
At first, I was dumbfounded, then frustrated and angry on behalf of the character. But I came to accept it and it’s definitely a top 10 film after providing that rollercoaster of emotions.
But there’s another movie eerily similar with the shock value and the ‘unreliable narrator’ point of view which makes for an exciting journey.
Do you know what it is?
It’s The Girl on The Train.Play
Starring Emily Blunt, it’s clearly a flick to get stuck into, and even critics think so too.
This 2016 suspenseful thriller is based on a novel of the same name, written by Paula Hawkins which follows the story of commuter Rachel Watson.
Watson takes the same train every day and during this ride, she sits at the window seat to catch glimpses of a seemingly perfect couple who live in a gorgeous home in the countryside.
However, things would quickly go wrong after she accidentally sees something she shouldn’t have and gets muddled into a police investigation, with herself becoming incriminated due to her unreliable past and memories.
Beginning her own investigation, it becomes clear that she can trust no one, not even those close to her.
It’s an absolute belter of a film and viewers agree.

On Rotten Tomatoes, one person wrote: “It is a really exciting film. It is a good plot based on a novel. This pared with nice acting makes this film to a good thriller/drama. The psychological aspect of alcohol addiction is shown very well an realistic. Its something special if you can throw your self in.”
Another penned: “Ultimately a typical Hollywood whodunit, but with enough quirkiness, twists & turns, clever back and forth timelines, blurring of memories due to alcoholism that it made for rapt viewing.”
Someone else wrote: “Pretty twisted and messed up, but goes to show how people can become confused with social media and lead themselves into believing fantastic things. It touched on the loneliness of modern life and its relation to poor relationships. It also had an interesting gaslighting aspect to it with drinking. It was on FX.”Featured Image Credit: Universal Pictures

Joanna Lumley accepted Wolf of Wall Street role after being promised she could snog Leonardo DiCaprio
Joanna Lumley starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2013 film, The Wolf of Wall Street.
Joanna Lumley has opened up on why she accepted her role in The Wolf of Wall Street and we’re loving her honesty.
The 77-year-old actor starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2013 movie The Wolf of Wall Street, taking on the role of Emma, the classy British aunt of Margot Robbie’s character.

If you’ve somehow still not seen the film, firstly shame on you, and secondly, the Martin Scorsese-led movie is set in 1987 and follows the real-life portrayal of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) who takes an entry-level job at a Wall Street brokerage firm.
The movie is undoubtedly just as wild as Belfort’s real life, with it documenting his rise and fall as a Wall Street stockbroker.
The film also includes the copious amount of drugs consumed, the money – which was often illegally made, and of course, Belfort’s relationships, affairs and flings.
And one scene in the film – which didn’t actually happen in real life, thankfully – showed Belfort kissing his wife’s aunt Emma, played by none other than Joanna Lumley.
Paramount Pictures
Now, in a new interview with actor Rob Brydon – who starred alongside Robbie in Barbie – Lumley revealed how the role in The Wolf of Wall Street actually came about.
“First of all I think this is the story, he wanted Julie Andrews to do it and Julie had just had that throat operation,” she said.
“Then they thought of getting an English actress and they sent it to Eileen Atkins who was very busy doing probably Doc Martin or something and couldn’t break her contract to do it – and then it came to me.
“So although I now pretend to boast to people and say ‘oh you know Leo had seen me and adored me, Martin (Scorsese) admired me forever’, that’s not strictly true.
YouTube/@RobBrydon
“But they send you the script, we do it now in England, but in those days only American scripts would come with your name printed diagonally in grey across it on every single page.
“You go ‘They want me in their film and this is my script’, so you see I just said ‘Yes’
“They said ‘No look look look at the script’.”
The script read ‘Kiss Leo DiCaprio,’ and the actor’s response was ‘Yes yes yes I’d love, yes I’d love to do this, I think I can fit it in’.
I mean, you could be forgiven for thinking that getting paid to make out with a Hollywood star is a pretty sweet deal.Play
But apparently not.
Speaking at a dinner for the Elizabeth’s Legacy of Hope charity a while back, the Brit said it’s really no fun kissing on film.
“I did kiss Leonardo DiCaprio, about 15 times in fact,” she recalled.
“But I’ll let you into a secret. It’s actually no fun kissing actors, no fun at all. There are so many takes and you both have to chew so much chewing gum.
“It’s like kissing someone in a dentist’s waiting room.”
