1% Club viewers left scratching their heads over impossible brainteaser where they ‘didn’t even understand the question’

Viewers of The 1% Club have been left well and truly pickled over a question asked to the contestants.

This ITV show is renowned for making people question their intelligence – as well as their sanity – as they sit at home and attempt to take on questions that could have earned them a hefty reward had they entered the competition.

There have been countless times where viewers have been either left absolutely raging over an answer, or wondering whether reality is real, and for good reason.

While many might think a bit of a brainteaser is enough to keep your mind in tip top shape, The 1% Club is something that might do the opposite.

With 100 contestants whittled down as they attempt to win the £100,000 prize, viewers can’t help but wonder how they manage to end up in the final round.

One example of a person being able to get to the £98,000 question was Hillal, who appeared on season 3 earlier this year with a bang and managed to bash out answers like there’s no tomorrow.

In the final, she was asked a question which had viewers questioning their sanity as she had to answer ‘What letter completes this sequence? SMHDWM.’

Looking at those letters, I have absolutely no idea what I’m supposed to be working out. Do any of you know?

Well, with just 30 second on the clock, Hillal provided her answer and managed to completely smash it.

Her answer was ‘Y’, and why was she correct? It’s because the sequence was in fact talking about the measurement in time.

SMHDWM and Y amounted to Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Days, Weeks, Months and Years.

Would you have guessed it correctly? (ITV)

She couldn’t believe her luck, while viewers at home were sat looking round at each other as they wondered ‘what the f**k was that question’.

On social media, people immediately piped up about the insane question, while some got it instantly, with one saying: “You could give me 10 hours and I couldn’t answer that. Never mind 30 seconds.”

Another commented: “I literally said Y because “Shake My Head Dya Know Whatta Mean Yeah?” and someone else wrote: “I didn’t even understand the question let alone get the answer.”

“That’s so easy for the 1% question,” said a user, while another penned: “This was the easiest 1% question I’ve ever seen, but they do say it’s only easy if you know the answer.”

This isn’t the first time, nor will it be the last time, that the show has divided fans.

During the Christmas special, host Lee Mack presented the contestants with two near identical images of an animated Christmas scene and asked to spot the difference between the two.

Well, it was an image of Santa, a reindeer and a snowman sitting down at a table together to eat turkey. However, Santa’s legs were gone in one of the images.

Seems, easy, right? Wrong. 28 people were eliminated as they couldn’t spot it.Featured Image Credit: ITV

Fans of The 1% Club were saddened to learn of the death of a particularly lovable contestant who’d told an incredible story on the show.

The ITV quiz show, hosted by Lee Mack, challenges 100 players to get through a series of questions that a diminishing amount of the public can find the answer to.

Many of the questions are in some way tricks or otherwise unorthodox, and a lot of the time it’s about figuring out the riddle of the question itself rather than being given all the pieces of the puzzle and having a few seconds to work it all out.

Between the questions are segments where Mack will engage in a bit of audience participation, and the most recent episode had quite the interesting array of contestants.

Among those he picked from the crowd this time were brothers competing against each other, while in past episodes he’s managed to pick out an audience member who won £6 million on the lottery before appearing on the show.

Mack jokingly called that bloke a ‘greedy sod’, but the man fell at an early hurdle as he couldn’t get the 90 percent question right.

This time around, however, the comedian struck up a conversation with contestant Steven Wong, who made one hell of a confession on camera.

According to Steven he’d almost landed the part of Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, explaining that he’d made it down to the final two.

“I didn’t realise this but apparently we got down to the final two and it was me and another kid,” he told The 1% Club.

“Don’t forget this was only when I was about 10!”

As we know, the role actually went to Ke Huy Quan, who went on to win an Oscar for his role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Mack and the other contestants were delighted by Steven’s anecdote, but the end of the episode contained a sad message.

Once the credits had rolled on the quiz show ITV viewers were shown a screen saying: “In memory of Steven Wong. 1972-2024.”

Viewers of The 1% Club wrote on social media that it was ‘very sad to hear about Steven Wong’ and offered thoughts to his family.

The time between filming episodes of the show and when they’re broadcast can be quite substantial, with those who win money on the show having to hang on until about 30 days after the episode actually goes on TV before receiving their prize.Featured Image Credit: ITV

That elusive dream of going on a game show and actually winning the prize money became a genuine reality for Daniel O’Halloran.

The Wirral-based contestant, 24, walked away with a whopping £99,000 after his mum signed him up for The 1% Club.

For those unaware, the popular ITV game show sees 100 contestants battle it out with a £1,000 stake with the hopes of getting to the latter stages of the competition.

With 15 increasingly difficult questions to get through, the aim is to correctly answer the last winning question that only one percent of the nation supposedly know the answer to.

If they get it right, there’s a whopping £100,000 cash prize up for grabs.

Daniel’s mum signed him up, as the family happen to be big fans of the show.

And in 2022, he agreed to giving it a try and headed to Manchester to film.

“I was quite confident in getting to the latter stages of the show, but I never in my wildest dreams imagined taking home that much money. I thought if I got to £10,000 with no money to fall back on, I’d take the £10,000 and wouldn’t gamble,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

But instead of playing it safe with £10,000, he risked it all and went for the big £99,000 question.

“If you list all the numbers from 1 to 100 in order, 100 would be the 100th number but what would be the 100th digit?” the question read.

After correctly answering ‘five’, Daniel recalled: “I lost control of my body. I was running around celebrating on stage in total shock. I never thought I’d be standing there on the show, let alone winning it.”

Incredibly, Daniel waited for the show to air on TV in 2023 before announcing the news so he could share the moment together with his mum.

He said: “It was very difficult, there were some moments I nearly blurted it out or my family would ask me and I couldn’t keep the smile on my face.

Along with the audience, Daniel was left stunned. (ITV)

“I only told my grandma and a few friends.

“When they were watching it, they couldn’t believe I’d done it. It was the best thing to see.

“They were in total shock – they said some things you probably couldn’t print in the paper! They couldn’t believe I’d kept it secret.”

On how he plans on spending the money, Daniel said: “I’ve got to be sensible, maybe look towards the house, pay the mortgage off. But I’ve got to enjoy it as well. I can’t take this for granted.”Featured Image Credit: ITV/X/@1PercentClubITV

‘Ridiculously easy’ 1% Club question catches out 50% of British public

I think a lot of us would confess we are pros at game shows after getting an answer correct from the comfort of our sofa.

It is all so common for us to be shouting the answers with a brew in hand while the contestant in the hot seat struggles to come up with the correct answer.

But obviously, the pressure of being in a TV studio knowing you are going to be on the telly is nothing compared to being at home with the tea and biccies out.

While the likes of The Chase and Pointless are all time classics, another firm favourite in the UK game show scene is The 1% Club.

The hit quiz show sees 100 members of the public put their common sense, logic, and intelligence to the test.

And then any contestant who correctly answers a question that just one percent of the nation got right wins a share of up to £100,000 cash.

Questions on the show end up circulating on social media after airing on ITV, with many users announcing whether they would have got said question right or wrong.

Lee Mack hosts The 1% Club.

ITV

One particular question has been doing the rounds on TikTok as of late and has been described as ‘ridiculously easy’ despite being the question only 50 percent of the British public got right.

As read out by host Lee Mack, the question goes as follows: “What single letter should be added at the beginning of 8 to make it heavy?”

In a clip reposted to the @quiznuggets TikTok account, viewers were asked how they had done with the question.

If you haven’t worked it out already, the answer is of course the letter ‘W’ – something the vast majority seemed to get correct in the comments.

“W. I got it before they started talking,” one commenter claimed.

A second added: “W got it in a millisecond,” while a third penned: “I believe it’s W then it would become weight.”

Meanwhile, another TikTok user now fancies their chances on The 1% Club after seeing this type of question at the 50 percent mark on the show.

Did you get the question correct?

ITV

They wrote: “What does the winner get? millions? I’d be rich.”

And a further TikTok user pretty much summed up the general consensus surrounding this question, as they wrote: “Got it before he finished saying the question, because I can read and that’s ridiculously easy. 50%?”

Bradley Walsh tells contestant not to ‘ruin his show’ after rude joke about question on The Chase

Bradley Walsh tells contestant not to ‘ruin his show’ after rude joke about question on The Chase

A contestant on The Chase got a joking telling off from Bradley Walsh after he made the whole studio laugh with a rude joke.

As far as the incredibly popular ITV quiz show is concerned, funny answers are part and parcel of the fun.

And yesterday’s episode (17 January) absolutely did not disappoint. Prepare for a giggle:

Yesterday’s big laughing moment was all thanks to a joke from contestant Reece, who was the second of his team to face chaser Paul Sinha.

As Reece was two from home and desperate to get his £7,000 back to the team, The Sinnerman beared down on him, little breathing room between the pair.

It was bad luck Reece was then posed a question he admitted he didn’t know the answer to.

Asked to pick whether a ‘finial’ in ceramics means an ornate spout, relief panel or decorative knob, Reece plumped for the decorative knob.

When you don't know the answer just pick the funniest one, it worked for Reece.

ITV

If you’ve spent any amount of time watching The Chase then you’ll know there’s a plethora of silly answers thrown into the mix, not least because Bradley Walsh can’t help but laugh when something like a decorative knob pops up.

And to give Reece his dues, when in doubt, you may as well just pick the funniest answer and run with it.

“I know quite a lot about decorative knobs,” Reece said as he explained his guess to the question, with Paul chipping in right afterwards to quip ‘we all do’.

Keep it together, Bradders.

ITV

“I have no idea, but if I’m gonna go home I’d like it to be on a decorative knob.”

For a moment – the briefest and most glorious of moments – Bradley’s face contorted a bit and it looked like we might have another one of those moments where he loses it.

Alas, the veteran host kept his composure (this time at least) while everyone else in the studio dissolved into fits of laughter.

Theatrically gesturing Reece over for a chat, he told the contestant: “Don’t come on here ruining my show.”

Cue another big laugh from the audience.

"Don't come on here ruining my show," Bradley Walsh joked with Reece.

ITV

Fortunately, Reece was absolutely spot on to go for the decorative knob and ended up adding £7,000 to the £1,000 first contestant Andréa had already made it back with.

In the end, the team managed to walk away with £7,000 split between three people – contestant David having taken a minus offer to knock £1,000 from their prize pot and Nesta caught by The Sinnerman.

Despite it being a pretty nervy ending, the team’s combined score of 17 in the final chase was enough to take the money home – Paul only able to reach 15 before the clock timed out.

As for what he’s going to do with his share of the money? Well, Reece said he’d be spending it on a trip to Sweden.
