The Intriguing Interstellar Fan Theory That Alters the Film’s Entire Meaning

The theory changes the entire meaning of the film

Interstellar fans are continuing to spot small details which change the film over a decade on from its release.

Starring Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway and a young Timotheé Chalamet, the film follows a group of astronauts attempting to find a new home for humanity via a wormhole near Saturn – and the ending is really a kick in the guts.

From the time theory to the ticking noise, there appears to be a lot more than meets the eyes – or ears – when it comes to Interstellar, especially following it’s re-release in IMAX this year.

And earlier this year, one fan on TikTok spotted what they believed, initially, to be a mistake, however, they realised that a shot from the very beginning of the film is reused later.

The TikToker further explained: “At first I thought this was a mistake, but then I realised, this is Christopher Nolan.

“Christopher Nolan wouldn’t reuse the same footage without a purpose.”

The two scenes are the shot of Cooper’s (McConaughey) aircraft right before he crashes in his dream, then again when the team enters Miller’s planets atmosphere.

He realised that he was looking at the scene all wrong, and that the opening sequence could be seen as a crash that no one should survive.

As such, the theory that Cooper is, in fact, dead the whole film was born.

It is one that shockingly holds up much more than most other ‘they were dead all along’ theories, and changes more or less the entire meaning of the film.

Fans have even spotted one particular moment that foreshadows this theory, taking an emotional moment and making it even more heartbreaking.

One fan on Reddit said: “Early in the film, Coop says to Murph ‘Once you’re a parent, you’re the ghost of your children’s future’. Coop was infact Murph’s ghost.”

The quote is important enough without the theory that Cooper is dead.

When he finds himself in the black hole later in the film, hidden behind bookshelves watching Murph’s life during the vital latter moments of the film, he is operating the role of an almost ghost.

But when you think about Cooper being dead the whole time, another scene takes on a completely different meaning.

In Looper’s video ‘Things In Interstellar You Notice After Watching More Than Once’, they point out that in the final scene where he finally comes back to find his daughter Murph on her deathbed, with him having not aged a day he is like a ghost walking back into her life.

They also point to the quote from earlier in the film foreshadowing this moment.

Others, however, have noticed how this scene takes on a completely different meaning if you think of him as a dead ghost.Play

One comment on a post theorising that he was dead in the whole film said: “I always found it strange, and noticed this on my second viewing, that when Cooper returns to see Murph on her deathbed, the only person that seems to care is Murph herself.

“Was he the ghost of her future?”

Another pointed out in the comments of the original TikTok theorising that he had died, writing: “That hospital room scene always sat wrongly with me.

“Coop is literally the hero, yet not a single member of his extended family acknowledges him.”

Unfortunately, Christopher Nolan has seemingly never commented on the theory that Cooper was dead the whole time, but if you put it all out, it does make sense.Featured Image Credit: Paramount Pictures

Fans 'can't unsee' what they thought was simple mistake in Interstellar after film re-releases 10 years later

Fans ‘can’t unsee’ what they thought was simple mistake in Interstellar after film re-releases 10 years later

Finding out new details about any film is hard enough in the social media age where every film has thousands of tweets about it within days of release.

What’s even harder than that is finding something completely new about a film that came out ten years ago and is one of the most discussed movies ever.

That is what one film fan did earlier this year ahead of the ten-year rerelease of Interstellar.

While nearly every Christopher Nolan film is worthy of being talked about over and over again, Interstellar is one that has stood the test of time to be talked about endlessly.

Whether it be fans figuring out the secret meaning to the ticking noise when they’re on the planet where time operates differently or various theories, it is a film full of discussion.

The film was re-released in select cinemas this year, and with it came a magnifying glass on the movie.

One fan on TikTok however, whose account is called ‘StarkVerse’, noticed two scenes that seemed quite similar.

He explained: “I just re-watched Interstellar, and I noticed what seemed like a mistake.

“I just cannot unsee this.”

https://www.tiktok.com/embed/7384494464154209569

The scenes in particular were a specific shot of Cooper’s aircraft right before he crashes in his dream, and then again when the team enters Miller’s planet’s atmosphere.

The man added: “At first I thought this was a mistake, but then I realised, this is Christopher Nolan. Christopher Nolan wouldn’t reuse the same footage without a purpose.”

This caused him to dig deeper into what it could mean.

He realised that he was looking at the scene from a different perspective than it should be regarded, and that the opening sequence where the initial shot is used depicts a crash that nobody ‘should realistically survive’.

The film is a Nolan classic (Paramount Pictures)

This led him to believe that Cooper actually died at the beginning of the movie, which to him, explained a lot of different components in the film.

For example, he went on to note that they referenced Cooper’s death during the Lazarus mission, which hints that he is on a journey through the unknown- aka, the afterlife.

On another note, did you know that Lazarus means ‘God has helped’ in Hebrew? And that he was brought back to life by Jesus, according to the Bible.

Just a food for thought when you think about this theory where Cooper is stuck travelling through purgatory to the afterlife.

Anyway, the TikToker thought similarly, referencing the ‘big sleep’ analogy in the film, which the crew mentions several times throughout the film.

The big sleep = death.

Do you think it was a mistake or intentional? (Paramount Pictures)

He also talked about Cooper travelling to the afterlife after going through Gargantua’s black hole, and his daughter, Murph, suddenly shown on the tesseract.

The TikToker believes that the whole plot symbolises Cooper’s journey through to the afterlife, which is why at the end of the video, when he enters a room to find his daughter, now elderly and on her deathbed, he’s there to greet her – looking exactly as he did when he died all those years before.

Apparently, it’s also why nobody in the room acknowledges him, except his dying daughter, who he’ll welcome to the afterlife.

It really does put a completely different spin on the story and throws out the time warp of Miller’s Planet.

Interstellar fans mindblown after finding out meaning behind ticking sound 10 years after film's initial release

Interstellar fans mindblown after finding out meaning behind ticking sound 10 years after film’s initial release

Viewers still can’t believe how much attention to detail was put into 2014’s Interstellar

Joshua Nair

It’s been 10 years since its initial release, but fans of Interstellar are still learning about some of the more intricate details in its plot.

Regarded as one of the best sci-fi films to date, the Christopher Nolan-directed 2014 flick is outstanding from the acting, to the cinematography, to the score.

Focusing on the mission of former NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) to find a new planet for humans to live on as Earth continues to decay away, we are taken on an emotional hunt through space and time with Cooper and his team.

The film is so iconic in fact, that it is being shown in cinemas again this year, being available in IMAX 70mm for the first time.

Anne Hathaway helps to make up the cast as Dr. Amelia Brand, as if the film needed any more star power, along with Hans Zimmer composing its iconic soundtrack.

Director Nolan is known for his attention to detail in his films, and Interstellar is no different, even planting a 500-acre corn field for a shot in the movie to avoid using CGI, as he often tries to, and even made a $150,000 (£112,000) profit after selling it after filming.

He even hired a well-known physicist to create equations to help make the most realistic depiction of a black hole, an animation that took 100 hours per frame to render. Talk about attention to detail.

However, there is a detail that even the most keen eared viewers may have missed while watching the classic. Spoilers ahead.

It’s all to do with the ticking noise that we hear when the characters are on Miller’s planet, up to their knees in water.

You might have missed it, so it might be worth booking tickets to watch the 10th anniversary screening of the film in cinemas to see what we’re talking about, as even if you heard the noise, you might not know if that was done on purpose or what its true purpose really was.

A ticking sound can be heard every 1.25 seconds on Miller’s planet, and as we now known that every hour on the planet is equal to seven Earth years, every tick represents an entire day on Earth. As if the scene itself wasn’t already intense enough.

It’s jaw-dropping stuff and further highlights how much effort the production crew put into certain details, and if you go back and count the ticks, you’ll see that the difference in time between Cooper and his daughter Murphy was in front of us the whole time.

However, some people have just realised what the eerie ticking sounds signify, and took to social media to share how shocked they were at the revelation.

One called it the ‘best movie of all time’, with others trying their hand at maths to see if the movie got it right with exactly how long Cooper was on the planet, but this is Nolan – he’s probably spot on.

Another user shared: “This movie should’ve won every Oscar.”

A third said: “My brain is big enough for this when I haven’t seen the movie. My brain is screaming that this isn’t how time works but I’m missing so much context.”

Another said: “This movie should’ve won every Oscar.”

But do you know what causes the time warp on the planet?

It’s down to time dilation, which is where time slows down under the influence of a strong gravitational field.

Not only is it influenced by gravity and motion, but it also leads to different experiences of time depending on the circumstances.

It’s so complex that it can result in one person experiencing a few seconds while another person sees everything in slow motion.

Such as Einstein’s special relativity theory which states that the faster an object accelerates, the slower it moves through time.

So, gravity’s pull affects the passage of time, and as Miller’s planet is near a black hole, it’s experiencing time at a much slower rate compared to Earth.

Yup. I’m going to need a lie down now.

Interstellar fans seriously divided over concept for movie prequel

Interstellar fans seriously divided over concept for movie prequel

As great as the film was, many think it should be left alone

Joe Harker

It’s been almost a decade since Interstellar released, and fans of the movie are still wondering whether they might get some more content.

The Christopher Nolan epic appeared to be very much a ‘one and done’ job, but that hasn’t stopped some hopeful fans from wondering what might happen if their show was revived as a series.

Prestige television is all the rage these days, and Interstellar was a blooming popular film, but even those who loved the movie might think that enough was enough.

Over on the movie’s subreddit, one fan asked whether or not people would like to see some sort of prequel to Interstellar, suggesting that the dozen journeys on the movie’s ‘Lazarus’ missions could be adapted into a series.

Just to recap you if you’ve not seen the films for a while, humanity is facing a global famine and we’re trying to look for a new planet to live on.

Do we want to see them again? (Paramount)

Luckily, humanity has found a wormhole they can travel through to another part of the galaxy, and a dozen explorers went through it in search of new life-sustaining planets.

These are the Lazarus missions, and in Interstellar we only see the end result of a few of the expeditions.

A total of three worlds out of a dozen were marked as potentially suitable for habitation, which is what the ‘Endurance’ mission which forms the main plot of Interstellar sets out to search for.

Along the way they find out the fate of some of the explorers, but don’t manage to track them all down.

Fancy a prequel about this bunch? Or is it better not to know? (Paramount)

It’s here that a fan thinks a prequel series might be in order, suggesting that if there was ever space to follow up Interstellar with something else it’s a series on the Lazarus missions.

However, it’s split fans of the movie, many of which reckon that it’s best to leave things where they are.

“As much as it pains me to say… no thanks. The story is done, it’s been told masterfully, and nothing more is needed,” one fan wrote, while another agreed that ‘the story isn’t about them, it’s about Cooper, Murphy, and love’.

Someone else said they ‘love the thought of more Interstellar content’ but reckoned ‘the masterpiece should be left alone’.https://embed.reddit.com/r/interstellar/comments/1csia0i/interstellar_should_not_get_a_sequel_it_should/?embed=true&ref_source=embed&ref=share&utm_medium=widgets&utm_source=embedv2&utm_term=23&utm_name=post_embed&embed_host_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ladbible.com%2Fentertainment%2Ffilm%2Finterstellar-theory-moment-changes-entire-film-694705-20241224

Others who were more on board with the idea said it wouldn’t ‘tarnish the legacy of the original’ and expressed an interest in seeing ‘a prequel series showing how the world went to complete s**t’.

What do you think? Should Interstellar make a comeback or should it be left the way it is?Featured Image Credit: Paramount

Interstellar fans warned about major plot giveaway you'll only notice watching a second time

Interstellar fans warned about major plot giveaway you’ll only notice watching a second time

There are so many hidden details and clues in the Christopher Nolan movie

Lucy Devine

If you’ve watched Interstellar you’ll probably agree it’s up there as one of the best sci-fi movies of all time.

The heart-wrenching film follows ex-NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (played by Matthew McConaughey) as he sets out with a team of researchers to find a new planet after Earth becomes inhabitable.

But it’s not your everyday dystopian sci-fi flick. In fact, it’s filled with mind-boggling twists that we come to expect with Christopher Nolan films.

And don’t even get us started on how many tears were shed while watching.

Fans will remember that when Cooper and the team travel to space, it becomes clear that the only way to save humanity is to gather data from inside the black hole.

Cooper sacrifices himself and leaves the rest of the team to descend into the black hole in his own spacecraft.

It is here that the ‘Tesseract’ allows Cooper to essentially travel back in time to provide his daughter, Murphy, clues about the black hole and how humanity can be saved.

Remember Murphy thinking she had a ghost? Well, that was Cooper all along.

The pair end up reuniting at the end of the movie, with Murphy being an elderly woman at this point, while Cooper has barely aged.

It’s certainly the kind of film you need to watch a few times to fully pick up on every clever little detail that Nolan included.

In fact, there was one detail that many fans missed when watching it for the first time – the ticking noise when the characters are on the watery Miller’s planet.

And if you listen carefully, it actually gives away the entire plot.

When the team arrive, you might have noticed that there’s a ticking sound that occurs every 1.25 seconds.

One viewer worked out that considering every hour there is equivalent to seven years on Earth, each tick represents one day.

Turns out the time difference between Cooper and his daughter was right there in front of us all along.

Did you notice the ticking? (Paramount Pictures)

Did you notice the ticking? (Paramount Pictures)

People were pretty blown away when they made the discovery.

One wrote on X: “Did you know that in Interstellar, you can hear a ticking sound every 1.25 seconds in Miller’s Planet scene? Now the interesting fact is each tick represents a day passing on earth.”

While another said: “The genius Interstellar music on Miller’s planet where each background ticking stood for a entire day passing on Earth. The weight of it all, so palpable.”

And a third added: “Interstellar was brilliant… I only realised the other day about the ticking sound.”

This tiny detail makes the whole scene way more emotional.
